Processing high volume of large images consumes a lot of resources. For many years Wikipedia had responded to the problem of large image files with a ban. With the advent of VipsScaler, a Wikipedia Mediawiki extension based on the fast, free VIPS image processing system, more and larger images can be hosted on Wikipedia. Whereas conventional image processing loads an entire image into a computer’s memory, VIPS reduces compute resources by chopping the image into tiles, then passing them for processing through a system’s processor cores before reassembling them.
