Abstract

Web Based Quiz Authoring and Publishing Tool

This Quiz Authoring system has been developed as part of the Virtual University Initiative. It evolved from a standalone application designed to assist in the creation of self-evaluation questions for the course module based on the UNEP's Global Environment Outlook 2000 report (please see the Related Links/References below.)

The new version has been built from scratch to work entirely on the Internet and includes some new features. It draws upon two technologies: XML for separating content from presentation and Cold Fusion for database management. Users can access it directly from their browsers without any extra requirements. The authoring interface is very intuitive and flexible that users with little computer knowledge can command the tool in a short time. Once the question sets are published they become available as URLs that can be readily integrated into any courseware applications.

GEO2000
Development of a Prototypical Instructional Unit in cooperation with UNEP

UNU-C3-Media and Technology Laboratory, in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and environment experts in IAS, completed a demo instructional module based on the reference materials, available here, which are a subset of the GEO2000 (Global Environment Outlook 2000) report produced by UNEP.

In the implementation, we used Macromedia Director, a multimedia authoring tool to create an interactive and animated presentation format of the original reference materials. Furthermore, we added a video lecture synchronized with slides into the module by using our Internet Studio, together with a quiz developed using our Assessment Authoring tool, and text-to-speech support for vocalizing instructional contents based on Microsoft Agent.

A prototype can be seen by following this link.

You are kindly invited to try our tool and let us know your comments. Please revisit this page soon for free trial access information. There are several enhancements already planned for the system (e.g., communication of test results to a server, analysis of group results, etc.). But your suggestions and criticisms are necessary to validate our design efforts. Thank you.
