Zero Emissions Symposium 2007

28 November 2007, U Thant Hall

The 21st century is called the “Century of the Environment”, and the Kyoto Protocol came into effect in February 2005. This was an important step forward for the international approach toward the issue on global warming.

The United Nations University-Zero Emissions Forum has held in the past symposia on the issues on global warming such as:

・“Climate Change and Zero Emissions”
(Marking the coming into effect of the Kyoto Protocol, autumn 2005)
・“Post-Kyoto Protocol” & “Contemplating on Sustainability” (spring & autumn 2006)
・“Prevention of Global Warming and Low Carbon Society”
(IPCC 4th Assessment Report and the movie ‘An Inconvenient Truth’, spring 2007)

However, in recent years, as many scientists predicted, evidence of a global warming trend has been increasing. Furthermore, unusual climatic conditions have caused serious localized damage in many parts of the world through massive hurricanes and typhoons, torrential rains, droughts, progressive desertification, heat waves, and other weather-related events.

In this year’s symposium, Sir Graham Fry, British Ambassador to Japan, will speak on the “Stern Review”, prepared by Sir Nicholas Stern last year, and on the UK’s Climate Change Policy. Let us be fully aware of the influence of ever-increasing global warming and the advanced measures being taken in the world today for its prevention.
