7 June 2001, Tokyo, JapanPrime Minister of Malaysia, Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad, spoke about the new role of the UN in the context of globalisation, as the inaugural lecture for the UNU/IAS U Thant Distinguished Lecture Series on 7 June 2001.
The Prime Minister spoke to a packed and appreciative auditorium at the UNU House in Tokyo, which was filled to capacity. The lecture was the first in a series intended to provide an informed contribution to the work of the UN in relation to the challenges it faces in the new millennium and what its role should be in addressing these issues.
Approximately six hundred people attended the lecture, including over fifty diplomats, twelve Japanese officials and politicians, and a large number of scholars, media representatives, students and the general public. After the speech, there was a half?hour long question and answer session for members of the audience, including those watching the live webcast and posting questions by email.
