The risks associated with the climate change are becoming more apparent recently. The community at developing region who’s living depend on the natural resources, or living in the most vulnerable areas in the urban cities are the most affected group by changing climate. For the last two decades, scientific knowledge on the future climate prediction and impact evaluation are accumulated, and the technology for reducing green house gases is being developed. On top of that, the contribution of bottom up initiatives by local communities based on the indigenous knowledge or social capital to cope with current climate variability are also been observed and highly recognized. Still, we need to closely integrate the scientific knowledge with local experience for effective adaptation to the changing climate.Since establishment, UNU-ISP GEIC has continuously implementing projects to promote the community participation into the environment related decision making process in developing countries as well as in Japan. In this symposium, we wish to promote the sharing of local experiences and initiating discussion on how to combine scientific knowledge and social institution to support local initiatives with experts and practitioners.
