Zero Emissions Forum - The Green New Deal to Promote Environment and Economy -

27 May 2009, U Thant Hall

In recent years, as many scientists predicted, evidence of a global warming trend has been increasing. Furthermore, unusual climatic conditions have caused serious localized damage in many parts of the world through massive hurricanes and typhoons, torrential rains, droughts, progressive desertification, heat waves, and other weather-related events.
Even more, a large-scale economic downturn, which is said to happen once in 100 years, is under way. Now, a new policy, in which both environment and economy will coexist and employment opportunities will increase, is urgently requested. Under these circumstances, UNU Zero Emissions Forum will hold a symposium on the theme of the “Green New Deal in USA and Japan”.   At our last year’s symposium we learned about “global warming and low carbon society”. We will move one step forward and think about Japan’s roles for zero emission, environment, economy, and employment measures. (Japanese-English simultaneous interpretation will be provided.)
