Lecture by Dr. Oscar Arias Sanchez, 1987 Nobel Peace Laureate, President of Costa Rica 1986-1990

6 October 2004, U Thant Hall

Lecture by H.E. Mr. Oscar Arias Sanchez, 1987 Nobel Peace Laureate, President of Costa Rica (1986-1990) on: “Visions of Peace”.

In his lecture, Former President Arias will highlight the fact that scientific knowledge and the maturity of ethical and political ideas put a better world within our reach, but humanity has still not been able to set the foundations of a firm and lasting global peace.

Mr. Arias will emphasize the need to set a specific agenda for international cooperation - one that focuses on environmental protection, a more equitable trade system and a coordinated global demilitarization. According to Mr. Arias, such an agenda is essential to ensure greater human health and happiness in the twenty-first century. As people around the world strive for prosperity and security, Japan and Costa Rica are uniquely positioned to serve as successful examples of development based on social rather than military spending. The lecture will be followed by a question and answer session.
