International Women's Day 2006

On 8 March 2006, more than 320 guests joined the 5th Public Forum on International Women's Day held at the UN House in Tokyo. The event was organized by 15 UN agencies represented in Japan.

This year’s programme included three exceptional highlights:

1. Two video messages from two recently elected women political leaders in Europe and Africa:

H.E. Dr. Angela Merkel, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany
H.E. Ms. Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, President of Liberia

2. A keynote speech and panel presentations by:

Ms. Ginko Sato, Honorary President, Japan Association for the Advancement of Working Women Board Director, Hitachi, Ltd; followed by three panel presentations on Women in Civil Society (Ms. Kimiko Horii), Women in Business (Ms. Yoshimi Nagamine), and Women in Academia (Prof. Glenda Roberts).

3. Video messages from the four female ambassadors to Japan:

H. E. Mrs. Solmaz Unaydin (Turkey)
H. E. Mrs. Guisse Maimouna Dial (Mali)
